Mamma said it was good for Pap to go on the radio and just say everything was fine and talk to this lady about embroidery and children and how sad he was to see his one baby-girl fly away to be a big woman on her own and tell people the colour of the wedding decorations. But she had been listening to Hah for months now, and that was not a woman to be played with. She wasn’t what Pap was used to, taking his money bags down to the radio station with him and chatting about the weather then leaving them there. All the radio hosts – even Puppa Gyallis! – were nice to politicians. Miss Hah might not be so nice. And Papa could not calm himself when challenged.

If any man, in the whole of this archipelago, touch my daughter pum-pum, I going cut him balls off and make him eat what left.

Please gods, he wouldn’t swear like that on live radio and tell everybody what was lost in a river.
